World Architecture Festival

The World Architecture Festival is the world’s leading competitive contemporary architecture symposium. It has brought together around 2,000 architects and designers across 70 different countries and a jury of more than 150 experts every year since 2008, and features a packed programme of initiatives, conferences, awards, exhibitions and collateral events. This year too, a large number of projects made the finals, with over 530 out of more than a thousand entries shortlisted, predominantly from China and Hong Kong, Australia, the UK, US and India. As always, the most prominent practices on the international scene – such as Zaha Hadid Architects, Heatherwick Studio, Bjarke Ingels Group, MVRDV, Ennead Architects, Rafael Viñoly Architects, Herzog & de Meuron, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Grimshaw, UNStudio, Perkins+Will, Shanghai Urban Architectural Design and White Arkitekter – were up against emerging realities. The shortlist also included three Italian studios: Mario Cucinella Architects, noa* network of architecture and MoDus Architects.

The talks and lectures held during the three days of the WAF were all brilliant and absorbing. They were opened by Andrew Whalley with a speech entitled ZERO, focusing on the need for energy efficient architecture to tackle the challenges of the Anthropocene, followed by talks by Massimiliano Fuksas, Elizabeth Diller, Kim Herforth Nielsen, Ben van Berkel, Sir Peter Cook, Angus Campbell, Nigel Coates and Marc Koehlerè, amongst others.
